ACE has reduced DSN antenna time during September. The current published DSN schedule (through 09/18/2011) has ACE losing ~1 day worth of recorded data after 10 days. The remainder of the September DSN schedule is being negotiated. During last week's solar activity, the ULEIS shutter autonomously closed. The ULEIS shutter can also close down to 6% and 1% if there is enough solar activity. Fri Jun 17 2011, DOY 168 14:45:58z closed to 25% Sun Jun 19 2011, DOY 170 19:27:34z open to 100% ======================================================================== Anomalies: DOY 168 06/17/2011 S-ACE-0616 G11-0043 DSS-54 Transmitter Red DSS-54 transmitter was declared red Thursday evening (167 2000z). The ACE attitude and spin maneuvers were scheduled for DOY 168 1615z. The ACE team requested SOHO to shorten their DSS-65 pass by 2hrs 10min and GEOTAIL to move from DSS-65 to DSS-54. SOHO agreed to the request and GEOTAIL did not need an uplink. The attitude and spin maneuvers were performed on DOY 168 without problems. IMPACT: If SOHO did not shorten their DSS-65 pass, the maneuvers would need to be either 1) performed during off-hours during the weekend or 2) risk losing the High-Gain Antenna signal requiring switching to the Broad-Beam Antenna. Background Information The High-Gain Antenna (HGA) drifts between 0.5 and 1.5 degrees per day away from Earth (the antenna is fixed, the drift is due to the orbit). The HGA constraint is currently set to 8 degrees where antenna performance drops ~2dB per degree. The HGA performance drops precipitously between 10 and 11 degrees. The following table gives the HGA angle if the maneuver had not been performed on DOY 168. Ultimately, the Thursday evening decision to try to still have the maneuver on Friday centered around the ability to coordinate FD and MMOC personnel over the weekend.
