Plotting SIS intensities

Energy bands for each of the SIS instrumental ranges are given for all level 2 elements in the table below, and also in tab-delimited text format.  The appropriate energy at which to plot the reported intensities depends on the particle spectra.  However, the ‘bow-tie’ analysis (e.g., Van Allen et al., JGR 79, 3559, 1974) is a method of characterizing an instrument response by a geometry factor x DE (referred to as <G>) and a representative energy,  <E>, which are approximately independent of the spectral index of the incident particle population.  This allows one to calculate the particle intensity (for a given energy range) and plot it at an appropriate energy (<E>) without a priori knowledge of the incident spectrum.

Bow-tie analysis of the SIS response results in the values of <G> and <E> as given in the table below for each instrumental range and level 2 element (also given are the geometry factors and energy bands as used in the current level 2 processing).  As the reported intensities are not calculated using this method, a normalization factor (ABT) must be multiplied by the intensities in order to utilize the bow-tie analysis.  For example, one would multiply the reported range-0 He intensities by a factor of 1.13 and plot the result at an energy value of 4.32.

More information regarding the bow-tie analysis can be found in this SIS memo.  Questions regarding this analysis should be directed to Christina Cohen.
