M87

Pictures of M87

This galaxy is about 60 million light years away and has a black hole at its center that is 3 billion times as massive as the sun.

The right hand panel is a Hubble Space Telescope image of the jet from the center of M87. The left hand panel is VLBA radio image of the region close to the black hole, where an extragalactic jet is formed into a narrow beam by magnetic fields. The false color corresponds to the intensity of the radio energy being emitted by the jet. The dark orange region is about 1/10 light year across.
