Ultra luminous infrared galaxies

A large subsample of ultraluminous infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) imaged with the Hubble Space Telescope shows evidence for multiple mergers. This is consistent with an evolutionary progression where smaller galaxies have merger hierarchically to form the galaxies observed today.
