This plot shows why an armlength of 5 million km was chosen. The bottom of the sensitivity curve depends only on laser power and telescope diameter. If the arms were shorter then the low frequencies are lost (> 107 solar mass BHs) whereas longer arms lose the high frequencies (< 103 solar mass BHs). An armlength of 5 million km is a compromise.
